Junior Fruits, Roots and Vegetables

2020 Class T:  Junior Fruits, Roots and Vegetables

Rules: Wipe specimen with a cloth to remove as much soil as possible – do not wash. Specimens with tops must be trimmed to 1” (unless stated otherwise). Pumpkins and squash must still have their stems. All entries must be fresh and grown by the exhibitor. All exhibits must be brought to the fair by the exhibitor. Ensure entries are uniform in size and shape, fresh, have good colour and are true to variety. Place entries on appropriate sized plates. Entry tag to identify age, grade and name of school as of June 2020.

Ages 6 and Under:

Prizes ~ 1st – $2.00; 2nd – $1.75; 3rd – $1.50, 4th – $1.00

  1. Bean, 1, the longest
  2. Carrot, 1, the longest
  3. Sweet corn stalk, 1, the tallest with no roots
  4. Sweet corn, 2 of any variety
  5. Cucumber, 1, the heaviest by weight
  6. Potato, 1, with the most eyes
  7. Pumpkin, 1 the smallest by weight
  8. Red or green tomato, 1, the heaviest by weight
  9. Zucchini, 1, the longest
  10. One named vegetable on a paper plate with the origin of country on plate, either a picture or map
  11. Have three different vegetables from around the world in an airplane, either toy or made, name vegetables and origin on paper – to be judged by the fair Ambassadors

Ages 7-9:

Prizes ~ 1st – $2.00; 2nd – $1.75; 3rd – $1.50, 4th – $1.00

  13. Have four different vegetables of the world with their country of origin, can use a placemat or drawing – to be judged by the fair Ambassadors

Ages 10-13:

2nd  $10 Gift Certificate for sweet corn donated by Holzworth Farms

2020 Pumpkin Prince and Princess

  • Special is open to any age
  • Pumpkin must be decorated with the Theme of the Fair: Around the World in 3 Fair Days
  • All entries must be brought to the Palmerston Arena Roots, Fruits and Vegetable class are on Friday August 21st before 11:30 am
  • All pumpkins will be judged by weight and decoration
  • Winners will be contacted Friday afternoon – please supply a phone number for contact on entry tag (failure to do so will require removal of entry)
  • The winners and their pumpkins will be displayed in the Palmerston fair parade on the Palmerston Farmers’ Market float on Friday evening at 6:30 pm. Winners will be responsible for collecting their pumpkins and meeting the float before the parade.

Prizes:

First place boy and girl – $5.00 and will be crowned and robed Prince and Princess;

Second place boy and girl – $3.00 and will be crowned Duke and Duchess;

Third place boy and girl – $2.00 and will be named Lord and Lady.

All pumpkins must be picked up at the end of the fair on Sunday August 23rd after 3:00 pm.
