Presidents Message

Greetings!  I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 137th annual Palmerston Fair on August 26, 27 and 28th.  The fair is a way to bring the community together to enjoy the past present and future.  This is my first year as president and I would like to say that it is a honour to serve such a wonderful organization.

Some of the events that will be happening this year are the Farmers Barbeque which will take place on April 22.  Over the last 16 years the Farmers Barbeque has donated over $120,000 back to the community!  On July 23rd we will be having our annual Tractor Pull.  This event is always very well attended and the pullers always put on a great show.  On Saturday August 13th, we are having a Horse Show put on by Heidi Martin on their farm 5791, line 89, Gowanstown.  There will be barrel racing and other western riding games.  Two weeks later will be the Palmerston Fair Weekend.  The Fair opens with the Ambassador Competition on Wednesday night.  On Friday we have our parade followed by the always popular Taste of Minto in the Community Centre.  We have brought back the Inflatables all weekend for the kids to enjoy.  New this year we have added a reptile show on Saturday as well as a honey bee exhibit to go along with our theme ‘How Sweet it is…Honey’.  I encourage you to come and bring your family to the fair, there will be something for everyone!

As mentioned earlier, this year’s theme is ‘How Sweet it is… Honey’.  Honey bees are a vital part of both agriculture and our ecosystem.  Did you know that roughly 1/3 of everything that we eat can be contributed to pollinating insects?  These busy little creatures are a lot like farmers, they work tirelessly to feed and support the community in which they live.  Without bees, like farmers, there would be a lot of hungry people.

The fair showcases the diversity of agriculture throughout our wonderful rural community and is also a reflection of the community spirit.    I would like to thank our wonderful fair board directors that work throughout the year to come up with new and exciting ideas.  I would also like to extend an invitation to anyone out there who would like to join the Agriculture Society.  If you have a keen interest in Agriculture, volunteerism and community, then the Ag Society is for you.  The success of the fair depends not only on the dedication of the Board of Directors, it depends on you!  It deserves your encouragement, assistance and enthusiasm.

Volunteers make a World of Difference!
